Taking Care of Your Teeth While Traveling for the Holidays

Long car rides, hectic airports, and yummy sugary treats can prevent us from maintaining good care of our teeth and gums during the holidays because we miss important brushing and flossing opportunities. So what’s the best way to care for our teeth while traveling?

  1.  Pack healthy snacks for the trip. Eating sugary snacks can make kids extra hyper in the car or plane, and can start forming bacteria that causes cavities especially if you can’t brush your teeth right away. Instead, bring baby carrots and broccoli, instead of picking up candy bars and cookies at a pit stop. If you’re planning to travel with kids, cut up fruits and veggies into sticks for easy snacking. Skip the convenience of boxed fruit juices, which can contribute to tooth decay, and opt for water instead.
  2. Bathroom Break = Brushing Break. Let’s face it, when we travel, especially with kids, there are a lot of bathroom breaks. Make the most of this pit stop by bringing and using mini-travel toothbrushes, toothpaste, & disposable floss sticks… and before you leave the bathroom, brush your teeth! If nothing else, rinse your mouth with water after eating at these pit stops.
  3. End the Day with a Thorough Cleaning. When you finally arrive at your destination, whether it’s at a hotel room or Grandma’s house, take a little extra time to focus on your teeth and help your kids with their final teeth cleaning of the day. Be sure everyone in the family flosses thoroughly, then brushes carefully.

No matter where you’re traveling this holiday season, you can always end the day on a minty fresh, healthy note with a little bit of effort. (Credit)
